Resumo: Study deals with the history of rural education from 1940 to 2009, from the memory of ten teachers who worked in multigrade classes in the city of Novo Hamburgo. Memories are analyzed from the perspective of "social time" and allowed us to understand the process of incorporation and choice by the Magisterium. It uses the methodology of oral history and semi-structured interviews, and documentary analysis. The analysis in the context of Cultural History emphasizes the dimensions of memory and its relation to the representation of teaching as a cultural practice and influence the design "vocation" of an era. Despite the traditional teaching, there is the representation of teaching as "priesthood."

Memórias são analisadas na perspectiva do “tempo social” e permitiram compreender o processo de constituição e opção pelo Magistério. Utiliza a metodologia da História Oral e entrevistas semi-estruturadas, além da análise documental. A análise, no contexto da História Cultural enfatiza as dimensões das memórias e sua relação com a representação docente como prática cultural e influência da concepção “vocacional” de uma época.
