Resumo: The poverty/social inequality binomial is a chronic problem in Brazilian society, which is rooted in slavery and the productive exclusion of freed slaves. Throughout Brazilian constitutional history, the ruling elites have obtained the most complete protection of their interests, to the detriment of the vast majority of the population. The present work deals with poverty in Brazil, based on official indicators, aiming to demonstrate the extreme inequality in the country, despite the promulgation of the 1988 Constitution, which elected social justice as the purpose of the economic order.
