Beyond the Economic View of Strategic Alliances: Sociological Implications of The Case of Unihoteis

Resumo: | The purpose of this paper is to discuss the phenomenon of strategic alliances through a sociological perspective as a counterpoint to prevailing economic view, which privileges a conception of rational actor in a utilitarian and contractual basis. The case study investigates the process of constitution of a strategic alliance in the hotel industry in Brazil. Interviews and documentary data were analyzed qualitatively through traditional content analysis and oral history technique. The results revealed relevant emergent sociological aspects concerning strategic alliances which formed the basis for the establishment of four analytical propositions: (A) the process of constituting strategic alliances is influenced by the activity of different interested actors distributed in the political arena, whose actions are guided not only by utilitarian expectations , but also symbolic; (B) the effort of incumbent actors to justify and legitimize a project of interorganizational cooperation and to mobilize other actors in favor of ideas and interests that are consistent with this project influences the process of constituting strategic alliances; (C) principles, categories and shared understandings of interorganizational cooperation , built on the interaction of the constituent actors with external agents, determine the formal and relational arrangements in the process of constituting strategic alliances; (D) the constitution of strategic alliances depends on how organizational actors interpret their membership as desirable or obligatory in a given social context. We conclude in favor to a complementary approach between economic perspective and sociological view in strategic alliance studies, which recognize the social embeddedness of the economic actors as well as the relevance of the institutional dimension of organizational environment. In doing so, we believe the economic approach will benefit from a more complex and comprehensive understanding of strategic alliances. |

El artículo tiene como base un estudio de caso el cual retrata una alianza estratégica en el sector de hotelería del Brasil. Las entrevistas y los datos documentales fueron analizados cualitativamente mediante la combinación de análisis de contenido tradicional y la historia oral. Los resultados mostraron aspectos emergentes del estudio sociológico de las alianzas estratégicas que sirvió de base para el establecimiento de cuatro proposiciones analíticas: (A) el proceso de formación de alianzas estratégicas es influenciado por la actividad de los diferentes actores interesados distribuidos en el terreno político, cuyas acciones se guían no sólo por las expectativas utilitarias, sino también simbólica; (B) el esfuerzo de los actores interesados para justificar y legitimar un proyecto de cooperación entre organizaciones y movilizar a otros actores a favor de las ideas e intereses que son consistentes con este proyecto influye en el proceso de formación de alianzas estratégicas; (C) principios, categorías y conceptos compartidos de la cooperación interinstitucional, basado en la interacción de los actores constitutivos con agentes externos, influyen en los acuerdos formales y relacionales en el proceso de formación de las alianzas estratégicas; (D) el establecimiento de alianzas estratégicas depende de cómo los actores organizacionales interpretan su membresía como deseables o exigibles en un contexto social particular. Se concluye a favor de la complementariedad entre la perspectiva económica y sociológica en el análisis de las alianzas estratégicas, el reconocimiento de la inserción social de los actores económicos, así como otras dimensiones institucionales del ambiente, lo que permite una comprensión más profunda del fenómeno.O propósito do presente artigo é discutir o fenômeno das alianças estratégicas à luz da perspectiva sociológica de análise em contraponto com a orientação econômica que privilegia a concepção de ator racional, sob uma lógica utilitarista e contratualista. O trabalho foi construído a partir do estudo do caso da constituição de uma aliança estratégica no setor de hotelaria brasileiro. Entrevistas e dados documentais foram analisados qualitativamente, combinando análise de conteúdo tradicional e história oral. Os resultados apontaram aspectos emergentes de ordem sociológica no estudo de alianças estratégicas, os quais serviram de base para a constituição de quatro proposições analíticas: (A) o processo de constituição de alianças estratégicas é influenciado pela atividade interessada de diferentes atores distribuídos numa arena política, cujas ações são orientadas não apenas por expectativas utilitárias, mas também simbólicas; (B) o esforço de atores incumbentes para justificar e legitimar um projeto de cooperação interorganizacional e para mobilizar outros atores em favor de ideias e interesses que se coadunam a esse projeto influencia o processo de formação de alianças estratégicas; (C) princípios, categorias e entendimentos compartilhados acerca da cooperação interorganizacional, construídos na interação dos atores constituintes com agentes externos, condicionam os arranjos formais e relacionais no processo de formação de alianças estratégicas; (D) a constituição de alianças estratégicas depende do quanto os atores organizacionais interpretam sua adesão como desejável ou obrigatória em um determinado contexto social.
