This thesis examines non-formal online communication between university professors and their students and also the virtual groups created by the students. The theoretical framework documented fundamental subthemes for the formation of the central reasoning of the work. The research object was the question "Does the use of non-formal online communication between teachers and students complement teaching / learning in higher education?". This work opens space for further research to be conducted, as the findings of the research provided important data to understand the needs that lead students to use online communication technologies to interact with their classmates and teachers. These reasons were clearly specified throughout the study as a complement and contribution to improving students' teaching / learning and formalizing online communication as a pedagogical dialogue between teachers and students. The study was qualitative and quantitative and had as research technique a data survey conducted in a sample of opportunity / convenience. The analysis of the collected data showed that the use of online communication helps to complement the teaching as reinforcement to the classroom classes, and enables the learning of higher education students, besides contributing to a pedagogical dialogue helping teachers and students in relationship after class.
