Resumo: This paper discusses the psychoanalytical approach of the phobic symptom, in comparison to the way phobia is approached by psychiatry, more specifically in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders – V (DSM-V, and the effects these approaches have on the clinic for children. Even though Freud did not carry out the analysis of children, he set the basis for this practice by stating that childhood experiences can be the source of anguish and even neurosis. In psychoanalysis, listening to the subject is paramount, even in early childhood; that is what the case of “Little Hans” illustrates. On the other hand, the psychiatric notion of disorder prevents the subject from taking part in the process of dealing with his own suffering. The present discussion seeks, therefore, to reflect upon the consequences, for the clinic with children, of treating the symptom of phobia as a disorder from which the subject needs to be set free, denying its value of truth.
