Resumo: This paper aims to discuss the semantic meaning of ficar (lit. to stay) followed by gerundive or participial verbs in Brazilian Portuguese. We argue that ficar is an aspectualizer which forms a stative predicate. We also propose that the meaning of continuity assigned to it is acceptable for the constructions on analysis and thus, some possible differences comes from compositional reasons, namely, the specific properties of gerundive and participial complements. Consequently, we reject previous analysis which argued for a continuity/iterativity meaning to ficar in gerundive constructions, but a change of state in contexts with participle complements. Based on verbal aspect notions, we check the validity of our proposal by means of a few hypotheses: results lead us to conclude that ficar+gerundive/participle forms a stative predicate, in which ficar has only one meaning in the periphrases.

Propomos que esse verbo seja um aspectualizador, contribuindo com a formação de um predicado com características estativas. Defendemos que a noção de permanência atribuída a ele é válida para as construções em análise e, assim, possíveis diferenças entre a complementação com gerúndio ou particípio sejam composicionais, isto é, são dadas pelas propriedades dessas formas nominais do verbo. Com isso, rejeitamos análises anteriores que atribuíam ao verbo uma semântica de permanência ou iteração na construção com gerúndio e uma de mudança de estado naquela com particípio.
