Resumo: The teaching of literature has always been linked to a perspective that privileges the expository class, the transmission of knowledge to be assimilated and returned, especially at the secondary level of education. It is what, in Freire's pedagogy, is called “banking education”, which does not take into account the knowledge that readers in formation bring. In this article we reflect on the contribution that Paulo Freire's pedagogy can offer to the teaching of literature at different levels of education. Central categories of the pedagogue's thought are discussed, such as “banking education”, “dialogism”, “oppressed”, and an attempt is made, based on theoretical reflection and our practice, to indicate paths for a less authoritarian approach to the literary text.

É o que, na pedagogia freiriana, denomina-se de “educação bancária”,  a qual não leva em consideração os saberes que os leitores em formação trazem. Neste artigo refletimos sobre a contribuição que a pedagogia de Paulo Freire pode oferecer ao ensino de literatura nos diferentes níveis de ensino.
