Speaking, listening, and reading: A program for the development of oral language

Resumo: Currently, the role of the oral language for the development of reading and communicative competence is unquestionable. However, the promotion of the oral communication competence has not been obtaining the same attention from investigation as reading. This study concisely describes a programme to promote the development of the oral communicative competence (CCO) – Communication and oral expression: speaking, listening, and reading in middle school – aimed for the 7th grade, and presents the results of the empirical study which analysed the impact of its implementation throughout one schoolyear in two public schools of Northern Portugal. The design used was quasi-experimental, involving a sample of 122 participants. The effects of the programme were assessed using GOAOCC – Grid for observation and assessment of the oral communicative competence, which assesses the verbal, paraverbal and non-verbal skills comprised in CCO, based on a Likert scale of 5 points (from 1=poor to 5=excellent). The results of the statistical analysis (MANCOVA and ANCOVA) show that the experimental group presents considerable high gains compared with those in the control group, not only on the three areas that are part of the CCO, but also on the total score.

Sin embargo, la promoción de la competencia comunicativa oral (CCO) no ha recibido, en la investigación, la misma atención de la lectura. Este estudio describe sucintamente un programa para promover el desarrollo de la CCO – Comunicación y expresión oral: hablar, escuchar y leer en la educación básica – destinado a estudiantes de séptimo grado, y presenta los resultados del estudio empírico realizado para analizar el impacto de su aplicación durante un año académico. El programa fue implementado en una lógica de infusión curricular por maestros de Portugués en dos escuelas públicas del norte de Portugal. Se utilizó un diseño casi experimental, con un grupo experimental y un grupo de control, y una muestra de 122 participantes, evaluados en cuatro momentos. Para evaluar los efectos del programa, se utilizó la GROACCO, una escala Likert de 5 puntos (1=pobre a 5=excelente), desarrollada para registrar, observar y evaluar la CCO en 3 dominios: verbal, paraverbal y no verbal. Los resultados estadísticos (MANCOVA y ANCOVA) muestran cambios significativos en el grupo experimental en los tres dominios de la CCO y en el score global.Na atualidade, é inquestionável o papel da linguagem oral para a aprendizagem da leitura e para a competência comunicativa. No entanto, a promoção da competência comunicativa oral não tem recebido, por parte da investigação, a mesma atenção do que a leitura. Este estudo descreve, de forma sucinta, um programa de promoção do desenvolvimento da competência comunicativa oral (CCO) – Comunicação e expressão oral: falar, ouvir e ler no ensino básico –, destinado ao 7º ano de escolaridade, e apresenta os resultados do estudo empírico que analisou o impacto da sua aplicação durante um ano letivo, em duas escolas públicas do Norte de Portugal. Foi utilizado um design quase-experimental, envolvendo uma amostra de 122 participantes. Para a avaliação dos efeitos do programa, foi utilizada a Grelha de Registo, observação e avaliação da competência comunicativa oral (GROACCO), que avalia as habilidades verbais, paraverbais e não verbais que compõem a CCO, com base em uma escala Likert de 5 pontos (de 1 = Fraco a 5 = Excelente).
