Motivations, contributions and implications of learning Portuguese as an Additional Language by Colombian university students: a pedagogical proposal

Resumo: | Most Colombian universities require certification of proficiency in at least one additional language as a graduation requirement. Among several options, some students choose to learn and certify the Portuguese language. The purpose of this research is to understand the motivations for this choice, as well as the contributions and implications of learning Portuguese as an Additional Language (PLA) by Colombian university students. For this, we built a semi-open online questionnaire that was answered by 140 PLA students from two private institutions of higher education, one in Colombia and the other in Brazil. Based on data analysis, we found that the motivations for learning Portuguese are both personal and professional. From a personal point of view, there is an interest in approaching the language and cultures of Brazil and Portugal. From a professional point of view, students say that Portuguese opens doors to an academic network that provides opportunities to learn about research, do exchanges and Project themselves in a broader job market. With a view to contemplating the analyzed motivations, we propose a pedagogical approach that brings languages and cultures closer together through an intercultural perspective and whose contente production by students is presented via the delivery of a portfolio. |

Entre las varias opciones, algunos estudiantes eligen aprender y certificar la lengua portuguesa. El propósito de esta investigación es comprender las motivaciones de esa elección, así como las contribuciones e implicaciones del aprendizaje del Portugués como Lengua Adicional (PLA) por estudiantes universitarios colombianos. Para eso, construimos un cuestionario semiabierto em línea que fue respondido por 140 estudiantes de PLA de dos instituciones privadas de educación superior, una en Colombia y otra en Brasil. A partir del análisis de datos, encontramos que las motivaciones para aprender portugués son personales y profesionales. Desde un punto de vista personal, hay interés por acercarse a la lengua y las culturas de Brasil y Portugal. Desde un punto de vista profesional, los estudiantes afirman que el portugués abre las puertas a una red académica que brinda oportunidades de conocer investigaciones, realizar intercambios y proyectarse en un mercado laboral más amplio. Con miras a contemplar las motivaciones analizadas, proponemos um currículo que acerque lenguas y culturas a través de una perspectiva intercultural y cuya producción de contenidos por parte de los estudiantes se presente mediante la entrega de un portafolio.A maioria das universidades colombianas exige como requisito de graduação a certificação de proficiência de pelo menos uma língua adicional. Entre várias opções, alguns estudantes escolhem aprender e certificar a língua portuguesa. O intuito desta pesquisa é compreender as motivações dessa escolha, assim como as contribuições e implicações do aprendizado de Português como Língua Adicional (PLA) por estudantes universitários colombianos. Para isso, construímos um questionário semiaberto online que foi respondido por 140 estudantes de PLA de duas instituições privadas de ensino superior, uma na Colômbia e outra no Brasil. A partir da análise dos dados, encontramos que as motivações para aprender português são de caráter pessoal e profissional. Do ponto de vista pessoal, existe o interesse em se aproximar da língua e das culturas do Brasil e de Portugal. Do ponto de vista profissional, os estudantes afirmam que o português abre portas a uma rede acadêmica que proporciona oportunidades de conhecer pesquisas, fazer intercâmbios e se projetar em um mercado de trabalho mais amplo.
