Hildegard of Bingen, Abbess of the Benedictine Order composed, in midtwelfth century, a book a on simple medicines, intitled Physica, in which she presented curative recipes using natural things. Physica's first book, De Plantis, describes how to treat the most diverse diseases by mean of the healing virtues of plants. Physica is the result of the Abbess's study and healing practice. This book shows a kind of fusion between three different traditions found in medieval Germanic territory, namely: the Latin Christian tradition, the Germanic folk tradition and the Greco-Roman medical knowledge, as suggested in studies in History of Science. Another aspect that we consider to have influenced the Abbess's healing knowledge was her complex and special way of seeing the world around her, typical of medieval mystical thought. This dissertation shows evidence of these aspects of influences on medical knowledge of Hildegard, by analyzing descriptions of some plants and their healthy virtues found in the first chapter of Physica. This work intends to contribute to the studies on Hildegard of Bingen in the field of the History of Science
