Concerning the teacher’s value: remuneration of the teaching work in Minas Gerais (1859-1900)

Resumo: This article discusses some facts that determined the remuneration of the male and female teacher of primary school in Minas Gerais province/state during the second half of XIX century. It shows that the remuneration was paid according to different criteria as the sex of the teacher; function position – effective, substitute, for example –, the localization of the school – rural, urbane, district or village –, the teaching position in which the male and female teacher worked, how long he/she was teaching, the number of the students in the class and others. Summary, the remuneration can be analyzed as a result of historical values that have been constructed inside the school and public sphere, and in the social relations outside them.

Summary, the remuneration can be analyzed as a result of historical values that have been constructed inside the school and public sphere, and in the social relations outside them. Este artigo analisa algumas relações que favoreceram a determinação da remuneração de professores e professoras do magistério público primário da província/estado de Minas Gerais, durante a segunda metade do século XIX. A remuneração no período estudado era definida a partir de diferentes critérios como o sexo do professor, situação funcional – se efetivo, substituto, vitalício ou interino –, a localização da escola – rural, urbana, distrito, freguesia e vila –, o grau em que atuava o professor ou professora, o número de alunos, o tempo de atuação e outros.
