Resumo: The subject-matter ‘Dance’ is discussed with regard to schools in Rio de Janeiro in the 1820s when the first well-defined initiatives on the teaching of dancing could be traced, and in the 1860s when gymnastics was incorporated with activities related to other body practices. What were the pedagogical purposes for the introduction of dancing in the school? How were dancing lessons organized (timetables, infrastructure, contents)? Who were the teachers responsible for the classes? Rather than taking a brief look at these pioneering initiatives on body education, the articulation of several social issues with the school context is discussed. The approach will also provide an investigation on the society in 19th century Rio de Janeiro.

The approach will also provide an investigation on the society in 19th century Rio de Janeiro.Este artículo tiene el objetivo de discutir la oferta de la danza en las escuelas de Rio de Janeiro entre los años 1820, cuando se perciben las primeras iniciativas mejor estructuradas de enseñanza de la modalidad; y la década de 1860, cuando crecieron las acciones vinculadas a otra práctica corporal – la gimnasia. ¿Qué intenciones había alrededor de la oferta de la danza? ¿Cómo ocurrían las lecciones (horarios, infraestructura, contenidos)? ¿Cuál era el perfil de los profesores responsables por las clases? Más que lanzar una mirada para estas iniciativas pioneras de educación del cuerpo, esperamos discutir la articulación de ciertos temas sociales con el contexto escolar. Así, este enfoque también nos permite investigar una faceta particular de la sociedad de Rio de Janeiro del siglo XIX.Este estudo tem por objetivo discutir a oferta da dança nas escolas do Rio de Janeiro entre os anos 1820, quando se percebem as primeiras iniciativas mais bem delineadas de ensino da modalidade, e a década de 1860, quando cresceram as ações ligadas a outra prática corporal – a ginástica. Que intencionalidades havia ao redor do oferecimento da dança? Como eram operacionalizadas as lições (horários, infraestrutura, conteúdos)? Qual era o perfil dos mestres responsáveis pelas aulas? Mais do que lançar um olhar sobre essas iniciativas pioneiras de educação do corpo, esperamos discutir a articulação de certos temas sociais com o contexto escolar.
