The Configuration of the Isolated Schools in the State of São Paulo (1846 – 1904)

Resumo: The aim of this paper is to reconstruct the history of the isolated schools in the state of São Paulo from 1846 to 1904. The analysis indicates that this type of primary school was part of the old model of school of longer duration and marks the emergence of the new term ‘isolated school’ as a development of the expansion policies of primary school education approved by the state government based upon internal differentiation of the school network. To carry out this study, 250 public school teacher’s reports from 1852 to 1897 were examined. The paper discusses the pedagogic organization and the functioning of the single schools in the 19th century, highlights their modernization at the beginning of the Republic period and problematizes the institutionalization of the isolated school in the São Paulo state public school education system.

La analise indica el pertenecimiento  de este tipo de escuela primaria  al modelo de escuela singular de antigua  y larga duración  además de señalar  la emergencia  del termo ‘escuela isolada’ como desdobramiento  de las politicas de expansión de la instrucción primaria logradas por los gobiernos  del estado de  San Pablo, basadas en la diferenciación interna de la red escolar. Para la realización del estúdio fueram examinados 250 infomes  de maestros  oficiales referentes al período de 1852 y 1897. El texto  discurre sobre la organización pedagógica y el funcionamiento de las escuelas unitárias en el siglo XIX, destaca la modernización  de essas escuelas en los princípios de la Republica y plantea como problema la institucionalización  de la escuela isolada en lo sistema publico de ensiñanza del estado de San Pablo.O objetivo deste artigo é reconstituir a história da escola isolada no estado de São Paulo, no período de 1846 a 1904. A análise indica o pertencimento desse tipo de escola primária ao modelo de escola singular de antiga e longa duração e demarca a emergência do termo ‘escola isolada’ como desdobramento das políticas de expansão da instrução primária, empreendidas pelos governos paulistas, assentadas na diferenciação interna da rede escolar. Para a realização deste estudo foram examinados 250 relatórios de professores públicos referentes ao período de 1852 a 1897.
