Resumo: In this article, the sonnet As Kingfishers Catch Fire, Dragonflies Draw Flame, by the English writer Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844-1889), is translated and analysed. An author endowed with great inventiveness, Hopkins’ compositions are often a challenge for the translator, since they require, in addition to knowledge of the source and target languages, a creative inventiveness parallel to that he possessed. In the same way, alongside our academic or orthodox translation, we add another one deliberately free, heterodox, which may be questioned perhaps in its external aspect, but not in what concerns Hopkins’ spirit or intentionality underlying his sonnet.
