The body that remains: Negative energy in Pedro Costa's cinema

Resumo: Pedro Costa’s cinema is crossed by human figures, such as Vanda Duarte and Ventura, who emerge in a tension between body, looking and image. In this essay, we consider the apparition of those corporealities as being in a permanent status nascendi that dismisses any status that might identify them as characters or subjects. We discuss carnality as that which is interlaced by negative energies that institute a form of subjectivity without subjects. Seeking homologies between film image and philosophy, in close connection with the thought of Brazilian philosopher Vladimir Safatle, we recognize the negative as a central aesthetic category that produces a proletarian image, highly magnetized by a power to revolt.

Neste ensaio, reconhecemos a aparição dessas corporeidades, sempre sob um permanente status nascendi a destituir a implantação de um estatuto que as identifique como personagens ou sujeitos. Para isso, discutimos a carnalidade como aquilo que é tramado por energias negativas a instituírem uma forma de subjetividade sem sujeitos.
