Cinema and education: the production of audiovisual materials for the teaching of sciences

Resumo: The aim of this paper is to present the partial results of a study which sought to teach Science (virus and bacteria content) within the scope of a Science Technology and Society (STS) approach, using as a didactical strategy the production of audio-visual materials, specifically stop motion. The main authors underlying the framework of this study are: Feldmann (2009), Chassot (2011), Santos and Auler (2011), Fresquet (2013), and Bazzo (2014). The methodological approach of the study is qualitative, descriptive, with participant observation. The study is being developed with students of secondary education, a group of the 7th grade of a public school in São João do Triunfo - PR, Brazil. The practical tool used is the production of audio-visual materials with the stop motion technique (the process of capturing frame by frame using a camera and a light source). Thus, the students created characters from materials such as modelling clay, drawings, magazine clippings and small objects, to give life and movement to audio-visual materials. The results showed that students became more motivated and interested in the contents addressed. It was also noted that students started to observe and discuss the issues addressed during the Science classes in more critically, making inquiries and relating what was studied with their own lives. The students were concerned with the following issues: the emergence of vaccines; people’s access to them; medicines’ reliability; neglected diseases in the country, among other relevant topics to the reflection process and to its critical reasoning.

Los autores principales subyacentes del estudio fueron: Feldmann (2009), Chassot (2011), Santos y Auler (2011), Fresquet (2013), y Bazzo (2014). El enfoque metodológico del estudio es cualitativo, descriptivo, con la observación participante. El estudio está siendo desarrollado con los estudiantes en una clase de 7º año de una escuela pública en São João do Triunfo - PR, Brasil. Una herramienta práctica se utiliza para producir audiovisual con el movimiento de la parada técnica (donde se hace el proceso de captura de fotograma a fotograma usando una cámara y una fuente de luz). Por lo tanto, los estudiantes crearon personajes de materiales como plastilina, dibujos, recortes de revistas y objetos pequeños, dando vida y movimiento en audiovisuales. Se observó que, como resultado de los estudiantes estaban más motivados e interesados en el contenido abordado. También se observó que durante las clases de ciencia en un enfoque CTS, que analizan de manera más crítica el tema, haciendo preguntas y referencias de lo que se estudió con sus propias vidas.Los estudiantes se referían a cuestiones tales como la aparición de las vacunas, el acceso de las personas a ellos, la fiabilidad de las drogas, las enfermedades olvidadas en el país, entre otros temasde interés para el proceso de reflexión y sentido crítico de ellos.O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar os resultados parciais de um estudo em que se procurou ensinar ciências (conteúdo de vírus e bactérias) em um enfoque CTS - Ciência, Tecnologia e Sociedade, utilizando como estratégia didática a produção de materiais audiovisuais, mais especificamente stop motions. Os principais autores que fundamentam o estudo são: Feldmann (2009), Chassot (2011), Santos e Auler (2011), Fresquet (2013) e Bazzo (2014). A abordagem metodológica do trabalho é qualitativa, descritiva, com observação participante. O estudo está sendo desenvolvido com alunos de uma turma de 7o ano de um colégio público de São João do Triunfo – PR, Brasil. A ferramenta prática utilizada é a produção de audiovisuais com a técnica stop motion (processo onde é feita a captação de fotograma a fotograma, usando uma máquina fotográfica e uma fonte de luz). Assim, os alunos criaram personagens a partir de materiais como massa de modelar, desenhos, recortes de revistas e pequenos objetos, para dar vida e movimento nos audiovisuais. Observou-se como resultado que os alunos ficaram mais motivados e interessados pelo conteúdo abordado. Também se notou que os alunos passaram a analisar os assuntos discutidos durante as aulas de Ciências de forma mais crítica, fazendo questionamentos e relacionando o conteúdo estudado com suas próprias vidas.
