The positive and negative affect schedule of dark immersive theatre experiences

Resumo: | Dark Immersive Theatre Experiences (DITE) have been growing in popularity all over the world. In a global context of subjectivity of the contemporary touristic experience, hospitality and tourism research tend to classify the management of emotions in two major categories: positive and negative. The aim of this paper is to use the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule – Portuguese Reduced Version (PANAS–VRP) scale to measure the positive and negative affects of participants in DITE before and after the experience. Then, it is intended to explore the relationship between positive and negative affects with consumer overall satisfaction. The results obtained in this study emphasize the importance of managing darkness as a positive emotion in these experiences. Furthermore, it was found females seem to report higher levels of negative emotions in comparison to males and that the enjoyment in being scared tend to decrease as age increases. The results of this study can be used by DITE managers to improve their experiences and therefore to enhance participants’ satisfaction. |

Num contexto global marcado pela subjetividade da experiência turística contemporânea, a investigação na área do turismo e hotelaria tem classificado a gestão das emoções em duas principais categorias: positivas e negativas. O objetivo do presente artigo passa por utilizar a escala Positive and Negative Affect Schedule – Versão Portuguesa Reduzida (PANAS-VRP) para medir os afetos positivo e negativo de participantes de DITE. Posteriormente, pretende-se explorar a relação entre os afetos positivo e negativo e a satisfação geral do consumidor. Os resultados obtidos neste estudo enfatizam a importância da gestão de emoções positivas em DITE. Adicionalmente, foi possível aferir que os participantes incluídos no género feminino tendem a reportar níveis mais elevados de emoções negativas comparativamente a participantes do género masculino e que o gosto em ser assustado tende a diminuir à medida que a idade aumenta.
