After stressing the need, both in terms of research and clinical practice, to be explicit about the processes and criteria involved in clinical decision-making, the author proceeds to examine the case. This approach intends to be explicit regarding the criteria underlying the decisions made about: (a) assessment – the present case is classified as «disturbance of panic with agoraphobia», underlying the need to take into account the functional, structural and contextual levels of analysis; (b) conceptualization – importance of differentiating between predisposing and triggering factors as well as the need to take into consideration the «cycle of panic/agoraphobia»; (c) therapeutic relationship – importance if the «therapeutic alliance» tailored to client’s characteristics in terms of bond, goals and tasks; (d9 intervention – the following components are stressed: «rationale», «focusing and grounding», «restructuring of surface structures», «in vivo flooding» and, «restructuring of deep structures».
