Resumo: Th e dissertation presented here aims at identifying issues relating to architectural rehabilitation in school facilities by analyzing the intervention carried out in High School Camilo Castelo Branco, Vila Nova de Famalicão, under the Programa de Modernização de Escolas com Ensino Secundário - Program for Modernization of Schools with Secondary Education. Th e work will be focusing on the rehabilitation of secondary school buildings and grounds, in Portugal, from an analytical and evaluation standpoint intended to supplement the author's own professional and practical experience with a theoretical basis. Th e dissertation is divided into three parts. Th e fi rst part consists of a study on the theoretical evolution of protection heritage that led us to the current understanding of the term Rehabilitation. Th e aim is thus to clarify the scientifi c knowledge of the documents and theoretical perspectives related to the topic. Th e second chapter will comprise of a historical background of secondary schools and construction practices in Portugal complemented with references to the Programa de Modernização de Escolas com Ensino Secundário - Program for Modernization of Schools with Secondary Education. Th e aim is to frame the subject of study in a particular group with similar characteristics and expose the crucial elements and confi gurations related to this program. In the third and last section the intervention performed in the High School Camilo Castelo Branco will be dissected - project in which the author has participated as a member of the architectural team. We will try to identify and emphasize the most relevant principles and fundaments relating to the main topic which this dissertation addresses: building rehabilitation. Th is part of the dissertation is developed between a descriptive and a critical discourse, thoroughly describing the project in an attempt to clarify the design and thought process that led to the adoption of what came to be the fi nal results.
