Resumo: The dissertation is based on the study between the relationship of representation, action and attitude, through the dialogue carried out through and with the human body, from an essential and structuring axis for its representation: Attitude. While representing in sculpture the human body, the position expresses an attitude and the attitude defines a position through which the sculpture expresses itself; starting from the position of the members to emphasize a dialogue, the relationship between position and structure and the balance and harmony between form and content / signification, through which the premises of conceptualization and sculptural thought are understood as a system of inherent relations that materializes in sculpture. In order to clarify the understanding of this problem, allowing a study focused only on the practical and theoretical question of the "human body attitude" and its contextualisation, a more particular approach is dedicated to the first moments about Attitude in Sculpture. In Machado de Castro and Assis Rodrigues there are two essential contents of the classic sculptor: the technological domain of the work and a solid artistic culture whose explanation is consolidated in works and reference texts. These have the merit of providing the Portuguese sculpture with a theoretical body that this art lacked since the sixteenth century, removing it from the official anathema and inserting it in the wider corpus of Portuguese culture. They are thus the first sculptors who theorized about attitude, and who represented it in their works - there is an evident similarity in their way of representing. It is significant to emphasize the importance of these two remarkable figures in the Portuguese sculptural scenery that succeed, having a strong influence in the public statuary of 1800, expressed in the evocation of memory through form
