No contexto da tradução, a tradução automática é um dos progressos tecnológicos mais importantes e úteis, sobretudo a nível empresarial. Considerando que é muito provável que os sistemas de tradução automática venham a ser cada vez mais utilizados, a um ponto em que o peso dos seus benefícios os tornará (quase) indispensáveis, este relatório explora esta tecnologia de ponta, dando a conhecer as suas noções mais básicas e fazendo uma contextualização dos seus desenvolvimentos até aos dias de hoje. Não descartando a importância da parte inicial do Relatório de Estágio, focada naquela que foi a experiência do estágio na entidade de acolhimento, os principais objetivos do relatório passam por investigar a eficácia da tradução automática nos diferentes setores e tipos de conteúdo e por explorar a questão “o tradutor como novo revisor?”. A base para a primeira investigação consiste num inquérito feito a tradutores profissionais, relativamente aos setores/tipos de conteúdo em que a tradução automática obteve um melhor desempenho. Já a base para a segunda questão incide sobre uma comparação entre os processos de tradução, de tradução com pós-edição e de revisão, com vista a entender com qual dos dois o processo de tradução com tradução automática (pós-edição) mais se assemelha. Os resultados das duas análises demonstram 1. que a tradução automática terá potencial em qualquer setor/tipo de conteúdo e que 2. o processo de revisão se aproxima substancialmente do processo de pós-edição, deixando em aberto a possibilidade de, no futuro, estes dois processos serem amalgamados num só.In a world where our lives are ruled by technology, the need to keep up with the latest technological advancements and getting the most benefit out of them has become a necessity. In the context of translation, machine translation is one of the most useful and important landmarks in terms of technological progress, especially on a business level. Considering it is very likely that machine translation systems will become increasingly more used, reaching the point where its benefits will make its use (almost) mandatory, this report explores this state-of-the-art technology, raising the awareness on its most basic levels and contextualizing its progress until the present time. Notwithstanding the relevance regarding the first part of this report, focused on the experience gathered during the internship, the main goals of this report concern investigating the effectiveness of machine translation in different sectors and types of content and exploring the question “is the translator the new reviser?”. The ground for this first investigation stems from a survey conducted among professional translators, regarding the different sectors/type of content where machine translation showed a better performance. The latter investigation, on the other hand, concerns a comparison between the processes of translation, translation with post-editing and revising, with a view to understand with which of the two the translation process with machine translation (post-editing) most resembles.
