Resumo: The present paper analyzes the prescriptive comments on the formation of the compoundtenses of the Portuguese verbal system, recorded in the Latin-Portuguese grammarspublished between 1535 and 1615, especially in De institutione grammatica libri tres(Lisboa 1572), by the Jesuit Manuel Álvares. In his work, Álvares criticizes the translation that has been made of these verb tenses in the handbooks for the teaching of Latin (through the auxiliary verb haver instead of ter), presents the reasons for this wrongtranslation and incorporates the compound tenses with ter in the verbal paradigms.These normative observations are the starting point to study the translation options ofthe authors of the Latin grammatical treatises of the indicated period.
