The main objective of this study was to deepen the investigation on the interaction between the practice of lullabies and maternal depression in the early mother-infant relationship. The following specific objectives were defined: i) understand the role of lullabies in the routine of falling asleep and the reactions of the child and mother to this practice; ii) analyze the frequency of the use of lullabies and their relationship with sociodemographic, family, pregnancy and childbirth variables; iii) understand how maternal depression influences this practice of reassuring the baby. This study is part of a research project on lullabies and early mother-baby interaction that covered a sample of 113 mothers, aged 19 to 44 years. An assessment protocol was developed that included a questionnaire on sociodemographic, pregnancy and sleeping characteristics of the baby, as well as several psychometric instruments, including the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results indicate that 65.5% of mothers sing lullabies. Of these, 64.9% started this practice after the baby was born and 78.4% sing traditional lullabies. Participants sing mainly during play and the moment of falling asleep the baby. This practice is associated with positive feelings such as calmness, tranquility, satisfaction and well-being. Singing lullabies seems to be related to lower levels of depressive symptomatology. The practice of lullabies finds a statistically significant relationship with pregnancy variables, namely the quality of the relationship with the baby's father and pregnancy planning. Regarding depressive symptomatology there were statistically significant associations with the variables ?moment when the mothers started the practice of lullabies?, ?situations and type of songs used?, and ?mother's feelings while singing lullabies?. This study provides new data on the relationship between lullaby practice and depressive symptomatology, supporting previous research indicating that this maternal practice has beneficial effects on mothers' emotional and mental well-being, mainly in situations of maternal depression. |
