CANCER ON THE ISLAND OF SÃO VICENTE, CAPE VERDE: AUDIT OF CANCER REGISTRY OF HOSPITAL DR.BAPTISTA DE SOUSA (2018–2019)

Resumo: We describe the cases of cancer registered between 2018 and 2019 in the Oncological Registry of Hospital Dr. Baptist D’Souza. Sao Vicente Island, Cape Verde. There is also a critical assessment of its quality and an action plan. The five most registered types of cancer, in order of frequency, in the period (2018-2019) were: breast, prostate, oesophagus, cervix and stomach. We found that the oncological registration forms are not filled out, and the registrars have difficulties in accessing clinical files and complementary exams. This fact does not allow staging the disease at diagnosis. The lack of follow-up information prevents the assessment of survival. Cape Verde’s population-based cancer registry was recently created and the HBS cancer registry (ROHBS) is its source of information in the barlavento region of the country. In this sense, it is fundamental that the ROHBS be legalized, powers delegated to registrars and the creation of conditions for their work and normalization of activity.

Ilha de São Vicente, Cabo Verde. Realizou-se também uma avaliação crítica da sua qualidade e foi proposto um plano de ação. Os cinco tipos de cancro mais registados, em ordem de frequência, no período referido foram: mama, próstata, esófago, colo uterino e estômago. Verificámos que as fichas de registo oncológico não estavam completamente preenchidas, os registadores tiveram dificuldades de acesso aos processos clínicos e exames complementares. Este facto não permitiu a realização do estadiamento da doença ao diagnóstico. A ausência de informação sobre o seguimento impediu a avaliação da sobrevivência. Recentemente foi criado o registo de cancro de base populacional de Cabo Verde e o Registo Oncológico do HBS (ROHBS) é a sua fonte de informação na região de barlavento do país.
