Brazilian education in the first republic: academic production in journals on the history of education

Resumo: This study aimed to map and analyze the studies on Brazilian education in the First Republic, published between 2000 and 2022, in three periodicals in the field of History of Education, to verify the main themes discussed and the most referenced authors in them. Concerning the methodological procedure, this is a state-of-the-art bibliographic study. A total of 2033 articles were found. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 504 were selected that dealt with education in the First Republic. For data analysis, categories of analysis were used. The results show that the categories most discussed by the selected articles were school institutions, with 34.52% of the studies, followed by teaching work (15.28%), textbooks (14.68%), and intellectuals of education (14.09%). It was concluded that state-of-the-art studies provide an overview of what has been investigated in the field and, simultaneously, allow us to identify possible gaps that still exist. In this regard, a study such as this one brings relevant contributions to the History of Education because it presents a balance of studies and shows spaces in which it will be possible to expand investigations.

Concernente ao procedimento metodológico, trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica do tipo estado da arte. Foram encontrados um total de 2.033 artigos. Aplicados os critérios de inclusão e exclusão, foram selecionados 504 que versavam sobre educação na Primeira República. Para a análise dos dados, foram utilizadas categorias de análise. Os resultados evidenciam que as categoriais mais discutidas pelos artigos selecionados foram: Instituições escolares, com 34,52% dos estudos, seguida de Trabalho docente (15,28%), Livro didático (14,68%) e Intelectuais da Educação (14,09%). Concluiu-se que os estudos do tipo estado da arte fornecem uma visão geral do que vem sendo investigado no campo e, ao mesmo tempo, permite-nos identificar possíveis lacunas ainda existentes.
