Resumo: This project studies the relationship between music and graphic design, particularly album covers and their importance for popular culture. It focuses on album covers from the rock and punk movements since those particular movements have originated some of the most famous and influential album covers of all time, like The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon or The Clash’s London Calling. This research aims to document the impact of the invention of the “artistic” album cover, by Columbia Records employee Alex Steinweiss in the 1930s, on graphic design and the music industry. It is divided in two main parts: one that studies in depth a list of album covers of those two movements, from 1967 until 1999 and another that addresses the changes that occured in the music industry and graphic design after the introduction of the digital formats like the CD, the MP3 and streaming services. This last part mentions album covers from 2000 onwards that managed to be relevant despite the change in the role of the album cover in the 21st century. It also studies the role of the vinyl record in album cover design both in its golden period (mid-20th century to the late 1980s) and in its revival from the mid-2000s. This research accompanies a website that documents the covers studied, their graphic design, their importante for the music industry and for the respective movements to which they belong. The website functions as an ever-changing open platform, to which new data that reflects and documents the emerging trends in music-related graphic design may be added at any time. This project, in both its theoretical and practical components, contributes to new knowledge by analysing and reflecting on the role and the profession of the graphic designer in the music industry. Simultaneously, it ponders on the importance of music-related graphic design in popular culture and in the history of graphic design
