Projecto Urbano e mobilidade na cidade contemporânea. Uma proposta para requalificar o espaço urbano da zona envolvente à estação ferroviária de Pombal

Resumo: This project is instigated by the weekly travels from Pombal to Porto but mostly by the need to intervene in a consolidated city and change the way we 'think' about mobility. The need for a completely new urban project arises, based on the new needs of the common citizen and all types of mobility, sticking with the Train Station and the city of Pombal as the main focus throughout the work. From a strategic point of view, it is intended that through the project itself, we begin the process of contextualization of the railway system, since its first travels in England until the newer contemporany visions of the 21st century. In order to achieve a concious project, we propose to discuss the intrinsic relationship between the city, the railway and the public space. These days, these relations are magnified by the intensified mobility patterns and also by the incentive to use a more sustainable form of mobility. Newer concepts as interface and intermodality start to emerge in the process of urban planning in order to answer to a rising need for freedom of movement and to make sure that there are better alternatives to the predominant use of the car. Pombal, as the case study, is located in a infrastructure node. A structuring point of urban life, which can ensure economic prosperity. However, because of its defined infrastructures it can also represent an obstacle to development and urban expansion. More relevant to our study, the passage of the railway in the heart of the city creates an 'urban gap' causes a clear separation of the urban tissue and a constant traffic jam, which justify the need for an urgent reconstruction of the city centre (around the train tracks). The final proposal, valuing the local mobility, intends to unite the territory and create improved enjoyable areas, that live of the constant harmony between the infrastructures and public spaces, through the drawing of a new interface, new paths and services. Therefore, the present dissertation seeks, above all, to question the role of an intervention in a mobility space, to open a dialogue of discussion and to contribute with a proposal that bets on the valorization of the city's identity.
