Correlations between the conceptions of practical activities in the “sustainable management of resources” and the characteristics of teachers

Resumo: The main goal of this study was to assess the Biology and Geology Portuguese teachers’ conceptions about the importance of practical activities (PA) in the teaching of the curricular unit “Sustainable management of resources” of the 8th grade, included in the curriculum of the discipline of Natural Sciences. Fifty-eight Biology and Geology professors, teaching in public schools, participated in this study. The instrument used was the inquiry questionnaire. The results revealed that participants’ conceptions of the importance of PA were not correlated with gender, length of service or initial training. Participants of the older age groups put a high value on the PA planning. The conceptions about the importance of the PA were significantly related to the strategies adopted, the frequency of the implementation of PA in the teaching of this curricular unit and the continuous training. Participants who considered PA important in the teaching of Geosciences presented a great satisfaction with their implementation.

Año de escolaridad. Participaron 58 profesores de Biología y Geología de enseñanza en las escuelas de educación pública portuguesa. El instrumento utilizado fue una encuesta por cuestionario. Los resultados indicaron que las concepciones de los participantes sobre la importancia de las AP no se correlacionan con el género, el tiempo de servicio y la formación inicial. Los participantes pertenecientes a grupos de edad más elevados valoraron más la planificación de las AP. Las concepciones acerca de la importancia de las AP estuvieron significativamente relacionadas con las estrategias adoptadas, la frecuencia de la implementación de AP en la enseñanza de esa unidad curricular y la formación continua. Los participantes que consideraron las AP importantes en la enseñanza de las Geociencias presentaron mayor satisfacción con su implementación.Este estudo tem como objetivo avaliar se as conceções dos professores portugueses sobre a importância das atividades práticas (AP) influenciam a sua implementação no ensino e aprendizagem da unidade curricular “Gestão sustentável dos recursos”, incluída no programa da disciplina de Ciências Naturais do 8.º ano de escolaridade. Participaram 58 professores de Biologia e Geologia a lecionar em escolas do ensino público português. O instrumento utilizado foi um inquérito por questionário. Os resultados indicaram que as conceções dos participantes sobre a importância das AP não se correlacionam com o género, o tempo de serviço e a formação inicial. Os participantes pertencentes aos grupos etários mais elevados valorizaram mais a planificação das AP. As conceções acerca da importância das AP estiveram significativamente relacionadas com as estratégias adotadas, a frequência da implementação de AP no ensino dessa unidade curricular e a formação contínua.
