Resumo: Knowledge, valuation and appreciation of the environment in which the individual develops fosters a sense of belonging. This study is a first approach to know the environmental perception of secondary school students in two coastal towns of Tamiahua, Veracruz, Mexico, regarding the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System (SALT). For this, a curricular analysis of the subjects of Biology and Geography of the 2011 study plan was carried out. Three instruments (closed questionnaire, unfinished sentences and open questionnaire) were constructed from this analysis to inquire about environmental knowledge, environmental values and the sense of belonging respectively. The results reveal that the expected content and learning for the two subjects cannot be contextualized with the Lobos-Tuxpan Reef System (SALT). Chi-square test revealed that proximity with SALT does not denote a significant difference in environmental knowledge. Particular ignorance of the environmental services provided by this ecosystem is manifested. Of the seven declared environmental values, empathy was the best represented for both schools. In relation to the sense of belonging, the students recognize that their life and their community are related to SALT. The need for students to receive pedagogical reinforcement in both subjects with a local focus is evident. This study can be considered by the environmental authorities in charge of SALT management to propose strategies for Education for Sustainability.
