Resumo: | For a few years as a chemistry teacher, I have realized great difficulty, by the students, in relation to the course content. Thus, in the doctoral thesis in progress, I tried to investigate possible influences of the School Science on Society and the reasons of the undergraduate degree course in Chemistry and Baharelado to opt for the area. Our goal is to identify the relationship of what is taught in science classes with the life of the student-citizen in society; know the representations of the students about the influence of school science on their lives; check if there are other influences, in addition to the content taught and learned on their career choices. For this article we consider some of the data of this thesis related to the possible influences on the option of Chemistry in undergraduate students in a higher education institution located in Sao Miguel Paulista / SP, the chemistry area. To investigate the possible influences on the choice of students, we used the semi-structured questionnaires. The closed questions aimed at knowing the profile of the students. Open questions were designed to give voice to the students so that they could talk about their choices. Research subjects were 114 undergraduate students, 23 Degree and 91 Degree. During the analysis of the questionnaires we noticed that on several occasions, the graduate students made reference to a chemical industry located in the region of São Miguel Paulista / SP, which was also influenced in their career choices and the development of the region and its inhabitants. As one of our goals was to determine whether there are other influences, as well as school science on the career choice of students, we then investigate the reasons of the said industry influence on students, the region and its inhabitants. To analyze the representation of students about the influence of this industry on its profissisonais choices, we turn to Moscovici (2009). Preliminary results show that, indeed, the presence of this industry in the region has brought, in addition to population growth, social and technological development, expanding trade, creation of recreational areas and public services such as hospitals, schools, kindergartens and increased lines transport, influencing the neighborhood culture and the lives of citizens. In view of these findings, we believe that the schools of that region in developing their educational proposals, can not ignore the presence of the industry and its influence on the lives of students; the School Science, worked in the classroom, should take into account the impacts and influences of this industry in the social development of citizens. |

The influence of a technological chemical industry in the development of a community/ neighbourhood and the in the local students’ choice of a Chemistry degreeInfluência de uma indústria química tecnológica no desenvolvimento de uma comunidade/bairro e na opção de estudantes da região pelo curso de QuímicaFor a few years as a chemistry teacher, I have realized great difficulty, by the students, in relation to the course content. Thus, in the doctoral thesis in progress, I tried to investigate possible influences of the School Science on Society and the reasons of the undergraduate degree course in Chemistry and Baharelado to opt for the area.
