Recreation, return and the new eternal: Ausonian epigrams in Portuguese

By resuming the relationship between Philosophy and Literature, this article proposes a discussion about poetry translation, taking into account, mainly, the ideas of Walter Benjamin, Roman Jakobson, Ezra Pound, Jacques Derrida and Haroldo de Campos. In addition to the discussion, the work also brings recreations of Latin epigrams by Decimus Magnus Ausonius, a poet of the IVth century c.e., who is also a recreator of other poems. In these recreations, carried out from the critical edition of Roger Green, we experience the exercise of standing up to the challenge of translating certain poems that would be full of difficulties and, therefore, more open to recreations, as Campos proposes. It is, then, a form of creative experience in one of the types of Ezra Pound’s make it new, since recreations deal with aspects of the extratext whose translation has been aesthetically potent and productive not via transcreation but via recreation, reimagination or reinvention.
