Problem Solving in the early years: possibilities based on the cognitive demands

Resumo: This article aims to present results of a research that investigated the levels of cognitive demands of a problem about Decimal Numbers proposed to fifth grade students of Elementary School. The research, of a qualitative type, had as participants 18 students from a municipal school, located in the north of Paraná State. The data were obtained through from the resolution of a problem, whose written production and the audios of the groups, after their transcription, were analyzed. The class was based on the Teaching-Learning-Evaluation Methodology of Mathematics through Problem Solving. Data analysis was based on the cognitive demands of the problem, which were previously listed by the researcher and, after the implementation of the problem, it was verified which levels (whether high or low) were reached by the groups. The results show that most of the cognitive demands of the problem were of a high cognitive level and highlight the role of the teacher so that the groups can establish relationships between new knowledge and what they already know, in the direction of “doing mathematics”.

La investigación, de tipo cualitativo, tuvo como participantes 18 alumnos de una escuela municipal, ubicada en el norte de Paraná. Los datos se obtuvieron a través de la resolución de un problema, cuya producción escrita y los audios de los grupos, luego de su transcripción, fueron analizados. La clase se basó en la Metodología de Enseñanza-Aprendizaje-Evaluación de las Matemáticas a través de la Resolución de Problemas. El análisis de los datos se basó en las demandas cognitivas del problema, las cuales fueron enumeradas previamente por el investigador y, luego de la implementación del problema, se verificó qué niveles (altos o bajos) alcanzaron los grupos. Los resultados muestran que la mayoría de las demandas cognitivas del problema fueron de un nivel cognitivo alto y destacan el papel del docente para que los grupos puedan establecer relaciones entre los nuevos conocimientos y los que ya saben, en la dirección de “haciendo matemáticas”.Este artigo tem como objetivo apresentar resultados de uma pesquisa que investigou os níveis de demandas cognitivas de um problema sobre Números Decimais proposto a alunos de quinto ano do Ensino Fundamental. A pesquisa, do tipo qualitativa, teve como participantes 18 alunos de uma escola municipal, localizada no norte do Paraná. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da resolução de um problema, cuja produção escrita e os áudios dos grupos, após sua transcrição, foram analisados. A aula baseou-se no roteiro da Metodologia de Ensino-Aprendizagem-Avaliação de Matemática através da Resolução de Problemas. A análise dos dados pautou-se nas demandas cognitivas do problema, que previamente foram elencadas pelo pesquisador e, após a implementação do problema, verificou-se que níveis (se alto ou baixo) foram atingidos pelos grupos.
