Perception of eating disorders among adolescents in a public school in the municipality of Ponta Grossa - PR: a contribution to science and biology teaching

Resumo: We investigated adolescents satisfaction with their body image, the understanding of eating disorders, and whether the topic is discussed in science and biology subjects. The study was carried out with 92 adolescents from city of Ponta Grossa-PR, Brazil. The Eating Behavior and Body image Test questionnaire was used, along with 4 open questions. For the questions contained in the questionnaire, the relative frequency was analyzed, and for the analysis of open questions, we used Content Analysis. We observed that the majority presented dissatisfaction with the body and/or weight, the understanding about eating disorders was fragmented and the topic was little discussed. These results reinforce the importance of approaching the theme in science and biology teaching.

El estudio fue realizado con 92 adolescentes de la ciudad de Ponta Grossa-PR, Brasil. Se utilizó el cuestionario Eating Behaviour and Body image Test y 4 preguntas abiertas. Para las preguntas contenidas en el cuestionario se analizó la frecuencia relativa y para el análisis de las preguntas abiertas se utilizó el Análisis de Contenido. Observamos que la mayoría presentaba insatisfacción con el cuerpo y el peso, la comprensión sobre los trastornos alimentarios estaba fragmentada y el tema era poco discutido. Estos resultados refuerzan la importancia del abordaje del tema en la enseñanza de las ciencias y la biología.Investigou-se a satisfação dos adolescentes com a imagem corporal, o entendimento sobre transtornos alimentares e se o tema é discutido nas disciplinas de Ciências e Biologia. O estudo foi realizado com 92 adolescentes no município de Ponta Grossa - PR, Brasil. Utilizou-se o questionário Eating Behaviour and Body image Test, juntamente com 4 questões abertas. Para as questões contidas no questionário foi analisada a frequência relativa e para a análise das questões abertas empregou-se a Análise de Conteúdo. Observou-se que a maioria dos adolescentes apresentou insatisfação com o corpo e/ou peso. O entendimento acerca de transtornos alimentares foi fragmentado e o tema era pouco trabalhado.
