Resumo: ABSTRACT Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of mitomycin C in anatomical and functional success after modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy. Methods: A prospective, double-blinded, randomized placebo-controlled study compared the effect of topical mitomycin C on modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy. Group 1 had modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy with topical saline, while Group 2 had modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy with topical mitomycin C. Success was defined as anatomical patency and relief of symptoms at the end of 6 months. Results: Six months after surgery, Group 1 (30 patients) showed anatomical and functional success rates of 86.7% and 83.3%, respectively. Group 2 (32 patients) showed anatomical and functional success rates of 87.5% and 84.3%, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups 1 and 2 (p = 1.000). Conclusion: The use of mitomycin C did not improve the anatomical and functional success rates of modified transcanalicular diode laser dacryocystorhinostomy compared to placebo.
