Resumo: This work aims to know the perceptions that university students from public schools have about the processes of reading and writing in the period of schooling related to the stage of Elementary School: Initial and Final Years. For this, semi-structured interviews were carried out with 13 students from the Psychology course at the Federal University of Ceará – Campus Sobral, and a Thematic Analysis of the collected data was subsequently carried out. It was possible to notice that traditional teaching methodologies are still very present in everyday school life, thus imposing certain difficulties that enable critical reading and reflective writing. In addition, socioeconomic aspects and curricular differences appear as fundamental factors to be analyzed, especially with regard to academic performance and the relationship of students with reading and writing habits. It is concluded that the presence of methodologies aligned with traditional and conservative positions limit the possibilities of building knowledge within the classroom, and the issues that cut across socioeconomic and curricular aspects directly impact the students' academic performance.
