IMPACTS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ON THE HEALTH OF CAREGIVERS OF PEOPLE WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Resumo: This research aimed to investigate the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the health of caregivers of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), during the period of social distancing. This is a qualitative study, carried out through semi-structured interviews, with 20 caregivers of people with ASD, linked to the Association of Families and Friends of People with Autism and the Children and Youth Psychosocial Care Center, in Imperatriz/MA. Data were subjected to content analysis in the Minayo thematic modality. The results show that the Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in the caregivers' routine, with the intensification of hygiene care to avoid contagion and changes in the school and therapeutic routine, which increased responsibility. As for the care process, there is little or no family support, and this task falls to the mothers. The burden makes self-care difficult, resulting in the caregivers becoming physically and mentally ill, with a diagnosis of depression, anxiety and panic disorder. It is concluded that there is an emerging need for public policies aimed at caregivers and at raising awareness among family members and the community in general, regarding the necessary support in this process. Se trata de un estudio cualitativo, realizado mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas, con 20 cuidadores de personas con TEA, vinculados a la Asociación de Familiares y Amigos de Personas con Autismo y al Centro de Atención Psicosocial Infantil y Juvenil, en Imperatriz/MA. Los datos fueron sometidos a análisis de contenido en la modalidad temática Minayo. Los resultados muestran que la pandemia Covid-19 provocó cambios significativos en la rutina de los cuidadores, con la intensificación de los cuidados higiénicos para evitar contagios y cambios en la rutina escolar y terapéutica, lo que aumentó la responsabilidad. En cuanto al proceso de cuidado, hay poco o ningún apoyo familiar, y esta tarea recae en las madres. La carga dificulta el autocuidado, lo que hace que los cuidadores se enfermen física y mentalmente, con un diagnóstico de depresión, ansiedad y trastorno de pánico. Se concluye que existe una necesidad emergente de políticas públicas dirigidas a los cuidadores y la sensibilización de los familiares y de la comunidad en general, sobre el apoyo necesario en este proceso. Palavras-clave: Cuidadores; Salud; Trastorno del Espectro Autista; Covid-19.   Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar os impactos da pandemia de Covid-19 na saúde de cuidadoras de pessoas com Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA), durante o período de distanciamento social. Trata-se de estudo qualitativo, realizado por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, com 20 cuidadoras de pessoas com TEA, vinculadas à Associação de Familiares e Amigos de Pessoas com Autismo e do Centro de Atenção Psicossocial Infanto-Juvenil, de Imperatriz/MA. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo na modalidade temática de Minayo. Os resultados evidenciam que a pandemia de Covid-19 provocou modificações significativas na rotina das cuidadoras, ocorrendo à intensificação dos cuidados de higiene para evitar o contágio e mudanças na rotina escolar e terapêutica, o que elevou a responsabilidade. Quanto ao processo de cuidado, há pouco ou nenhum suporte familiar, recaindo sobre as mães essa tarefa. A sobrecarga dificulta o autocuidado, resultando no adoecimento físico e mental das cuidadoras, com diagnóstico de quadros depressivos, de ansiedade e transtorno do pânico. Conclui-se que é emergente a necessidade de políticas públicas voltadas aos cuidadores e à conscientização dos familiares e da comunidade em geral, quanto ao apoio necessário neste processo.
