Psychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on individuals with autism spectrum disorder: a systematic review

Resumo: | The COVID-19 pandemic forced national authorities to take unexpected measures, such as social isolation and social distancing. Within this context, individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) were greatly harmed, as they added the aforementioned symptoms to their pre-existing condition, raising the question of what were the psychosocial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic in individuals with ASD. Systematic review made in the databases: Virtual Health Library and the National Library of Medicine from United States of America . Inclusion criterias were: written in Portuguese, English or Spanish, between December 2019 and December 2021, being within ethical research standards and being field research studies. The exclusion criterias were: articles unrelated to autism or COVID-19, reviews, editorials and opinion articles. It was identified that individuals with ASD were only benefited from social distancing if it did not lead to major changes in their routine. The family aspect showed to be divergent between approximation versus conflict between peers. The question of virtual social network has become an anxiety-generating factor for these individuals. With regard to mental health, this was definitely the most affected, with significant increases in levels of anxiety, stress and depression, generated by the changes in routine and the difficulty of continuing with their treatments. It was evident, therefore, that individuals diagnosed with ASD suffered numerous losses during the pandemic, especially in their mental health. It became clear that it is essential to understand them, given the difficulties with socialization and its consequences on mental health, their skills in the midst of work and their relationship with digital socializing. |

En este contexto, las personas con Trastorno del Espectro Autista (TEA) se vieron muy perjudicadas, ya que sumaron los síntomas derivados de la pandemia a su condición diagnóstica preexistente, lo que generó la interrogante de cuáles serían los impactos psicosociales de la pandemia. en individuos con TEA. Revisión sistemática en las bases de datos: Virtual Health Library y National Library of Medicine de Estados Unidos de América. Los criterios de inclusión fueron: escritos en portugués, inglés o español, entre diciembre de 2019 y diciembre de 2021, estar dentro de los estándares éticos de investigación y ser estudios de investigación de campo. Los criterios de exclusión fueron: artículos no relacionados con autismo o COVID-19, reseñas, editoriales y artículos de opinión. Se identificó que las personas con TEA solo se beneficiarían del distanciamiento social si no conducía a cambios importantes en su rutina. El aspecto familiar se mostró divergente entre la aproximación versus el conflicto entre pares. La cuestión de la red social virtual se ha convertido en un factor generador de ansiedad para estos individuos. En cuanto a la salud mental, definitivamente esta fue la más afectada, con incrementos significativos en los niveles de ansiedad, estrés y depresión, generados por el cambio de rutina y la dificultad para continuar con sus tratamientos. Era evidente, por tanto, que las personas diagnosticadas con TEA sufrieron numerosas pérdidas durante la pandemia, especialmente en su salud mental. Quedó claro que es fundamental comprenderlos, dadas las dificultades de socialización y sus consecuencias en la salud mental, sus habilidades en medio del trabajo y su relación con lo digital.A pandemia da COVID-19, obrigou as autoridades do mundo todo a tomarem medidas inéditas, como o isolamento e distanciamento social. Dentro desse contexto, os indivíduos dentro do Transtorno do Espectro Autista (TEA) foram grandes prejudicados, pois somaram os sintomas advindos da pandemia à sua condição diagnóstica pré-existente, fazendo com que fosse levantada a dúvida sobre quais seriam os impactos psicossociais da pandemia de COVID-19 em indivíduos com TEA. Revisão sistemática nas bases de dados: Biblioteca Virtual da Saúde e a National Library of Medicine from United States of America. Os critérios de inclusão foram: redigidos em português, inglês ou espanhol, entre dezembro de 2019 e dezembro de 2021, estar dentro das normas éticas de pesquisa e ser estudos de pesquisa de campo. Os critérios de exclusão foram: artigos sem relação com o autismo ou com a COVID-19, revisões, editoriais e artigos de opinião. Foi identificado que indivíduos com TEA só se beneficiariam do distanciamento social se isso não acarretasse grandes transformações em sua rotina. O aspecto familiar se mostrou divergente entre aproximação versus conflito entre os pares. O quesito rede social virtual passou a ser um fator gerador de ansiedade para esses indivíduos. No que se refere à saúde mental, esta definitivamente foi a mais prejudicada, com aumentos significativos nos níveis de ansiedade, estresse e depressão, gerados pela mudança de rotina e à dificuldade de continuidade em seus tratamentos. Evidenciou-se, portanto, que os indivíduos diagnosticados com TEA sofreram inúmeros prejuízos durante a pandemia, principalmente em sua saúde mental.
