Resumo: Introduction: Playful activities are present in places of recreation, especially in hospital playrooms, which are considered essential for children to be distracted during hospitalization. Objective: To analyze the importance of play therapy in the hospital context, through the scientific literature, to describe the strategies and techniques of play therapy in the hospital context and to discuss the limitations found in the assistance of nurses during play therapy. Method: Integrative literature review with a qualitative approach, guided by the following question: "What is the importance of children's play therapy in the hospital setting?" The searches were carried out in the following databases: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online via PUBMED, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Web of Science, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Nursing Database, using the descriptors Child; Play Therapy; Hospitals and Hospitalized Child with the aid of the Boolean operators "AND" and "OR". Results: 76 articles were identified, 16 of which were selected for this review. The studies were grouped into three thematic categories: Importance of play therapy in the hospital context; Strategy and technique of play therapy in the hospital context; and Limitations found in nurse assistance during play therapy. Play therapy seeks to develop activities encompassing the context of teamwork, humanizing work in the hospital context. Final considerations: It is concluded that play therapy has positive benefits, being an effective non-pharmacological method, reducing fear, stress and anguish, as well as favoring learning and creativity, facilitating better adherence to treatment.
