Resumo: This article aims to problematize the categories clean, renewable and low-cost energy which are used to characterize hydroelectric power plants in Brazil, by developing arguments that dismantle these concepts. In addition, it discusses the mechanisms of environmental injustice linked to the current energy generation model and the interfaces of this process with the damages caused to affected populations. Methodologically, this is a bibliographic review based on the perspective of the Environmentalism of the Poor, developed by Martínez-Alier. Based on the suggested argumentation, it was concluded that nowadays the environmental issue is reduced to climate change and, more directly, to carbon emission, leaving aside the issues of degradation, environmental pollution and health, as well as political and social issues.
