Alternative methodologies in teaching Evolution in a public school in Piauí

Resumo: Evolutionary knowledge is necessary for the compression of biology. However, this content is approached in a quickly way and it is usually disconnected from biological reality, through the exposure of concepts and processes in a mechanized and fragmented way. This study aimed to evaluate the use of a didactic game entitled "Vida na lagoa" developed to facilitate the understanding of evolutionary processes and concepts. The game was applied to 32 students from the 3rd grade of high school in a public school in the state of Piauí. The research had a qualitative and quantitative approach, and data collection was performed by two questionnaires (pre-test and post-test). The progression of the students' knowledge, after using the game, was assessed based on the normalized learning gain (g). The students' knowledge about evolutionary concepts and processes was satisfactory after using the didactic game. The average normalized learning gain was (g = 0.60) for the concept of mutation and (g = 0.54) for the concept of natural selection The teaching methodology allowed students to understand the evolutionary dynamics and the exposure of evolutionary concepts present in biology.

La enseñanza de la biología enfrenta muchas dificultades, principalmente la falta de herramientas y de las estratégias metodológicas. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el uso de un juego didáctico, "Vida na lagoa", creado y aplicado con el propósito de facilitar la comprensión de los estudiantes de escuelas públicas sobre los procesos y mecanismos evolutivos. El estudio se desarrolló en una escuela pública del interior de Piauí, con 32 alumnos de 3º grado de Bachillerato. La investigación fue guiada por un enfoque cualitativo y cuantitativo, la reunión de datos se realizó a través de dos cuestionarios, aplicados antes (pre-test) y después (post-test) del uso del juego. La metodología mostró resultados satisfactorios para el aprendizaje de conceptos evolutivos, ayudando en la motivación de los estudiantes. La ganancia de aprendizaje normalizada (g) fue medio para el concepto de mutación (g = 0.60) y selección natural (g = 0.54). La percepción de los estudiantes sobre la importancia de utilizar metodologias alternativas en la enseñanza de la Biología, mostró que el 67,4% sintieron motivados con las prácticas y experimentos en las clases de Biología. Por lo tanto, los resultados sugieren que la metodologia fue eficiente para comprender y aprender conceptos y procesos evolutivos.O conhecimento evolutivo é necessário para a compressão de toda a Biologia. No entanto, esse conteúdo é ministrado de forma rápida e desvinculada da realidade biológica, a partir da exposição dos conceitos e processos de forma mecanizada e fragmentada. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar o uso do jogo didático “Vida na lagoa” desenvolvido com o intuito de permitir a compreensão dos processos e conceitos evolutivos. O jogo foi aplicado com 32 alunos da 3ª série do Ensino Médio de uma escola pública do estado do Piauí. A pesquisa teve uma abordagem quali-quantitativa, e a coleta de dados foi realizada por meio de dois questionários (pré-teste e pós-teste). A progressão dos conhecimentos dos alunos, após o uso do jogo, foi avaliada a partir do ganho de Hake (g). O jogo foi satisfatório no aprendizado de conceitos evolutivos, com ganho normalizado de aprendizagem médio para o conceito de mutação (g=0,60) e seleção natural (g=0,54).
