The Pequeno Contador by Alípio Franca: the didactic material and its pedagogical potential in teaching Arithmetic

Resumo: This article discusses the historical problem of the potentialized purposes of didactic materials indicated for the teaching of school mathematics, in the Brazilian context of the pedagogical vacancy of Escola Nova. More specifically, it analyzes the Pequeno Contador, created and disseminated by the educator Alípio Franca from Bahia, in the first part of the 20th century. The theoretical and methodological basis are about the cultural history, in the sense of attributing the historical meanings to the school culture, to the purposes of school subjects and to the knowledge historically produced by the protagonists of school education and the means adopted in the production of knowledge in the school environment. The results show that the purpose of this school material, as it consists of a “multidisciplinary” instrument of economic education, would be the social reproduction of adult life at school, since it is in agreement with the pedagogical moment of the period when it was produced, circulated and appropriated. It expressed characteristics of the active method, building up a didactic resource that represented the modernization of school instruction at that time.

Más concretamente, analiza el Pequeno Contador, creado y difundido por el educador bahiano Alípio Franca, en la primera mitad del siglo XX. La base teórica y metodológica comprende la historia cultural en el sentido de atribuir los significados históricos de la cultura escolar, los propósitos de las asignaturas escolares y los saberes históricamente producidos por los protagonistas de la educación escolar y los medios adoptados en la producción de conocimientos en ese ámbito. Los resultados indican que al ser un instrumento “multidisciplinario” de educación económica, este material escolar tendría el propósito de reproducción social de la vida adulta en la escuela, ya que está en consonancia con el momento pedagógico del período en que se lo produjo, circuló y apropió. Expresó características del método activo, conformando un recurso didáctico que representó la modernización de la instrucción escolar en el momento considerado.Este artigo trata do problema histórico das finalidades potencializadas por materiais didáticos indicados para o ensino de matemática escolar, no contexto brasileiro da vaga pedagógica da Escola Nova. Mais especificamene, analisa o Pequeno Contador, criado e divulgado pelo educador baiano Alípio Franca, na primeira metade do século XX. A fundamentação teórica e metodológica compreende a histórica cultural no sentido de atribuir os significados históricos da cultura escolar, das finalidades das disciplinas escolares e dos saberes produzidos historicamente pelos protagonistas da educação escolar e dos meios adotados na produção de conhecimentos no ambiente escolar. Os resultados apontam que a finalidade desse material escolar, por consistir em um instrumento “multidisciplinar” da educação econômica, seria a reprodução social da vida adulta na escola, visto que está em consonância com o momento pedagógico do período em que foi produzido, circulado e apropriado.
