Construction of functions from geometric problems: an investigative approach

Resumo: | This paper presents a research that aimed to identify possibilities of the investigative approach to teach functions from geometric problems. The proposal was carried out as part of a broader Brazilian project of the Programa Observatório da Educação (Education Observatory Program) and developed with a group of nine high school teachers from public schools in the city of São Paulo throughout two four-hour meetings. The activities were posed in the geometric framework and implemented with concrete materials and technological resources, later they were applied in teacher’s classroom. The theoretical support came from Douady’s jeux des cadres. The research methodology was qualitative, the data was comprised of teachers’ productions (digital files and paper and pencil registers) and classroom materials. The interpretative analysis highlighted that, in the participant teachers’ view, these investigative activities may help the students better understand aspects related with the study of functions while establishing connections among them and the areas and perimeters of the geometric figures studied. The participants concluded that the investigative approach may help the students to integrate several mathematics field contents and to develop research capacity and perseverance in the search for results, particularly regarding the use of different strategies, validation techniques and results control. |

A proposta foi desenvolvida no âmbito de um projeto do Programa Observatório da Educação, com participação de nove professores do Ensino Médio de escolas públicas de São Paulo, em dois encontros de quatro horas. As atividades integraram conhecimentos sobre áreas e funções, foram enunciadas no quadro geométrico e implementadas com auxílio de material concreto e recursos tecnológicos e, posteriormente, aplicadas em sala de aula. Como suporte teórico consideramos as mudanças de quadros de Douady e como metodologia a qualitativa com coleta por vídeo gravação dos encontros e recolha dos registros tanto em papel e lápis quanto em arquivos digitais. A análise interpretativa evidenciou que, para os participantes, essas atividades investigativas podem auxiliar a compreensão de propriedades de funções afins e quadráticas e o estabelecimento de conexões entre elas e as áreas e perímetros das figuras geométricas estudadas.
