Resumo: The present study aimed to investigate the functioning, structure, and program of the Brazilian Public Schools Mathematics Olympiad (OBMEP), as well as to understand its relevance to the state of Ceará. The study was conducted through a qualitative-quantitative descriptive documental research approach. Data analysis, as defined by the objective, focused on three categories of analysis, namely: OBMEP program characteristics; Ceará's results in OBMEP; and Ceará's participation in programs and tools present in OBMEP. It was concluded that programs such as PIC jr, PIC, and PICME, implemented by OBMEP, indicate an attempt to democratize Mathematics for students in Basic Education and Higher Education, thus seeking to promote new ways of understanding this area of knowledge. However, when comparing large-scale educational indices (PISA and SPAECE), it is not possible to observe significant impacts in terms of benchmarks, that is, educational goals to be achieved. In this perspective, it is suggested that the practice and implementation of OBMEP programs and projects also focus on making mathematical knowledge accessible to all, requiring that the projects developed also address this type of issue, namely, students with low performance in the Mathematics discipline.
