Identity, memory and projected futures: personal narrative and temporal plots

This paper aims to stablish a relation between the concept of psychological identity and affective forecast. The concept of identity employed is derived from the narrative paradigm in cognitive psychology. The studies of Gilbert (1998;2000;2001) related to affective forecast are presented. Affective forecast is the capacity of predict future emotional states (GILBERT et al. 1998). The guiding hypothesis is that the studies of personal identity have much to gain if they integrate the fact that individual use future emotional states when they are formulating what they are at the present. The present work aims to demonstrate conceptually how individuals link past, present and future via affective forecasts. The results points to several gaps that tends to remain open if the research of identity does not address affective forecast as a part of identity building. Furthermore, the concept of narrative identity has been the most useful to the problem at hand.
