Sanctuary of guerrillas: The forest as a space of war in the years of the Military Dictatorship

Resumo: This article discusses the figurations of the forest, as a social space, in the Brazilian Military Dictatorship. To do so, it starts with a brief discussion about how the hegemonic Brazilian intellectual tradition dealt with the theme of the forest and tropical nature. Afterwards, the perceptions of the military and guerrillas about the forest are compared, in three different situations, the Vietnam War, Che Guevara's guerrilla in Bolivia and the Araguaia Guerrilla, through the use of conceptual instruments from the philosophy of Henri Lefebvre. Indigenous peoples also appear as another voice, bringing the dimension of another cosmology to the forests. The purpose of this article is not to look for a common denominator to these different figurations of the forest, but to show them in their conflicts and complexity, thinking of the forest as a space of multiple and conflicting conceptions.

Para ello, se parte de una breve discusión sobre cómo la tradición intelectual hegemónica brasileña abordó el tema de la selva y la naturaleza tropical. Posteriormente, se comparan las percepciones de militares y guerrilleros sobre el bosque, en tres situaciones diferentes, la Guerra de Vietnam, la guerrilla del Che Guevara en Bolivia y la Guerrilla de Araguaia, mediante el uso de instrumentos conceptuales de la filosofía de Henri Lefebvre. Los pueblos indígenas también emergen como otra voz, trayendo a los bosques la dimensión de otra cosmología. El propósito de este artículo no es buscar un denominador común a estas diferentes figuraciones del bosque, sino mostrarlas en sus conflictos y complejidad, pensando el bosque como un espacio de concepciones múltiples y conflictivas.Esse artigo discute as figurações da floresta, como espaço social, na Ditadura Militar brasileira. Para tanto, parte-se de uma breve discussão sobre como a tradição intelectual brasileira hegemônica lidou com o tema da floresta e da natureza tropical. Depois, comparam-se as percepções de militares e guerrilheiros sobre a floresta, em três situações distintas, a guerra do Vietnã, a guerrilha de Che Guevara na Bolívia e a Guerrilha do Araguaia, mediante o uso de instrumentos conceituais da filosofia de Henri Lefebvre. Os indígenas surgem, ainda, como uma outra voz, que traz para as florestas a dimensão de uma outra cosmologia.
