The urban periphery and social recognition: an analysis departing from the school

Resumo: The aim of this article is to analyze the role of the school in the face of demands for social recognition of suburban students and in overcoming the existing challenges in the subordinate relationship of this group with the State, anchoring itself, notably, in the critical-normative theory of Axel Honneth. The empirical basis of the research was the application of questionnaires and focus groups with peripheral high school students from a public state school. It was observed that living on the periphery is a marker of difference in cities that favors the association with poverty and crime and that the individuality of students is tainted, as they are unable to perceive themselves with abilities considered relevant to social life. To promote recognition, the peripheral experience must be problematized at school, betting that “reading the world” can undo the stigmas and marginalization.

La base empírica de la investigación consistió en la aplicación de cuestionarios y círculos de conversación con estudiantes de secundaria periférica de una escuela pública estatal. Se observó que vivir en la periferia es un marcador de diferencia en las ciudades que favorece la asociación con la pobreza y la delincuencia y que se empaña la individualidad de los estudiantes, ya que son incapaces de percibirse dotados de habilidades consideradas relevantes para la vida social. Para promover el reconocimiento, la experiencia periférica debe ser problematizada en la escuela, apostando a que “leer el mundo” puede deshacer los estigmas y la marginación.O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar o papel da escola frente às experiências de negação do reconhecimento social vivenciadas por estudantes periféricos, bem como na superação dos desafios existentes na relação subalternizada deste grupo com o Estado, ancorando-se, notadamente, na teoria crítico-normativa de Axel Honneth. A base empírica da pesquisa consistiu na aplicação de questionários e rodas de conversa com estudantes periféricos de ensino médio de uma escola estadual pública. Observou-se que morar na periferia é um marcador de diferença nas cidades que favorece a associação com a pobreza e o crime e que a individualidade dos estudantes é maculada, na medida em que são impossibilitados de se perceberem dotados de capacidades consideradas relevantes para a vida social.
