Resumo: Textual genres, as live language and constantly changeable actions performed by social subjects, consist of limitless types and aspects, considering the endless situations, functions and facets of the human action. In accordance with the aims of Linguistics to reflect upon the use of language as a tool for human development (DOLZ & SCHNEUWLY, 2004), in this work we propose to present reflections upon the National Exam for High Schools Exame Nacional do Ensino Médio (ENEM), viewing language from the socio-interactionist perspective (BRONCKART, 1999/2006). Thus, we search to discuss the textual production suggested in the exam (empirical test of the argumentative/writing ability) and the language activities performed at school. Concerned with the social importance embedded in the test, we discuss this serious problem that surrounds mainly the school environment, as this attitude may mean initiatives for revision and reassessment of the PCNEM, of the material provided by the National Plan of Textbooks (Plano Nacional do Livro Didático –PNLD) and of the curricular structure designed by the schools that work with high school students, and consequently, of the abilities for the students to perform with the language
