This article presents an assessment of the trajectory of rural education in Brazil in the XIX and XX centuries, with emphasis on primary education (early grades of the current Elementary School). In the past and present, the education of rural workers in developing countries has remained an educational challenge of undeniable proportions. Based on recent studies on the subject, this article has as a background the right to education of rural workers linked to the struggle for land. The analysis focuses on the proposals for childhood education in rural areas, the movement for the ruralization of education and the institutionalization of primary school in the countryside. It also addresses institutional and pedagogical problems of isolated schools, the question of providing and training teachers culminating in the most recent policies of nucleation and closure of rural schools.
