Resumo: This work investigates problems in the phonological awareness of professors of English as L2, which is one of the largest obstacles to effective teaching. As a research question, we outlined the diphthongs on the segmental level of pronunciation. The method used is the inductive, and the application consisted on collecting, via audio recording, the speech of five English professors and teachers of English as L2 at universities and language schools. After analyzing the pronunciations, in comparison to the General American Accent, we could see that there is a relevant deficit in relation to the level of phonological awareness of Brazilian teachers of English.
