Resumo: The article aims to analyze the process of urban expansion of São Miguel/RN, in the 21st century, a small town located in the Semiarid. The following methodological procedures were adopted: descriptive research, with quali-quantitative approach; based on bibliographic, documentary study and direct observation. It was verified that the city presented three forms of urban expansion: expansion of the PU, through the approval of Municipal Laws, growth of the city from the increase of the built spot and from the parcelling of the soil, for housing purposes and / or for the implementation of enterprises. It is concluded that there was an increase in the population, especially the urban one, and the physical space built of the city was expanded.

Se adoptaron los siguientes procedimientos metodológicos: investigación descriptiva, con enfoque cuali-cuantitativo; basado en el estudio bibliográfico, documental y la observación directa. Se verificó que la ciudad presentaba tres formas de expansión urbana: expansión de la UP, a través de la aprobación de Leyes Municipales, crecimiento de la ciudad a partir del aumento del lugar construido y de la parcelación del suelo, para fines de vivienda y/o para la implementación de emprendimientos. Se concluye que hubo un aumento de la población, especialmente la urbana, y se amplió el espacio físico construido de la ciudad.O artigo tem como objetivo: Analisar o processo de expansão urbana de São Miguel/RN, no século XXI, uma pequena cidade situada no Semiárido. Foram adotados os seguintes procedimentos metodológicos: pesquisa descritiva, com abordagem quali-quantitativa; sendo baseado em estudo bibliográfico, documental e observação direta. Verificou-se que a cidade apresentou três formas de expansão urbana: expansão do PU, através da aprovação de Leis Municipais, crescimento da cidade a partir do aumento da mancha edificada e a partir do parcelamento do solo, para fins habitacionais e/ou para implantação de empreendimentos.
